Osteoporosis is a disease in which the elements of the bone deteriorate, increasing the risk of fracture. Osteoporotic fractures are typically referred to as fragility fractures because they occur in situations where healthy people would not normally break a bone. Common fragility fractures occur in the vertebrae, hip, rib and wrist.
A bone density test, also referred to as bone densitometry or DEXA scan, determines whether you have osteoporosis or are at risk for osteoporosis. The results will determine how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone. It is a fairly accurate exam to predict your risk of fracture. With this knowledge, you and your doctor can work toward prevention.
