Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy
If an abnormality or lump has been detected in your breast, your doctor may want us to perform a biopsy (remember, not all lumps are cancerous……most are not). A biopsy is a simple procedure done at The Breast Care Center which involves removing samples of tissue from the breast with the appropriate needle, as determined by Dr. Visconti. Referral for a breast biopsy can raise many questions and concerns for a patient, however, it is important to remember that 80% of breast biopsies do not turn out to be cancerous.
Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy
A core needle biopsy is used to remove small tissue samples from solid masses or lumps that are found in the breast. During the procedure, a small needle is guided into the breast by Dr. Visconti using Ultrasound guidance and a tissue sample is removed. The entire procedure is done quickly in our office so you won’t even need stitches. After your biopsy, you can walk out of the office, be driven home by your driver and carry on with the rest of your day. The tissue samples will be sent to a pathologist, who can evaluate the specimen and make a more definitive diagnosis.
Fine Needle Aspiration
Fine needle aspirations are also performed by Dr. Visconti under ultrasound guidance. A small needle about the size used to draw blood is carefully inserted into the fluid filled cyst. The fluid may be sent to the pathologist for a more definitive diagnosis. This procedure does not require you have a driver with you.
